How Chicago’s murder clearance rate breaks down

From 2011 to 2018, CPD sent 1,456 murder cases to prosecutors.

There were 4,135 murder cases in Chicago in that time frame, putting CPD’s “clearance rate” at 35%.

Of the cases sent to prosecutors, 516 resulted in convictions so far.

Some cases are still pending in court, while others were dropped by prosecutors or ended with not guilty rulings.
